A scenic, natural 7,600-acre wildlife habitat, the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is primarily a safe haven for the hundreds of species of mammals and birds that make their home within its borders. A few miles of hiking trails offer visitors the chance to observe these creatures and enjoy New Jersey's outdoor beauty. Located about 20 miles west of Newark, the refuge is largely isolated from human development.
